We are very excited to have been commissioned and to commence work on a new project in the heart of South Kensington, where we are taking on a large, period residence and will be transforming it into 3 modern and elegant apartments by converting the ground floor garages, refurbishing the existing apartment on the first floor and extending the roof to provide for a second and third floor maisonette.
As with every project, things need to get worse in order to get better. The “demolition stage” is actually really exciting as this is when we start to see the fabric of the building and what we are truly working with. And there are always surprises - especially when working with old, period buildings! You frequently unearth things which you did not expect when designing the spaces, which often restrict or obstruct the practicality of a design and you need to quickly adapt and come up with practical solutions. It is challenging but this is the beauty of an evolving design.
Our advice is - do not panic, every challenge may also present an opportunity to improve your design. Be confident and communicate with your client, but also be prepared to offer solutions!
In our next blog we will be presenting you with a series of mood boards we are currently preparing for the design schemes of the apartment and we can’t wait to have your opinion on them.
